Group A

A high-quality clash between Valencia CF and Real Betis got the tournament underway in fitting fashion, with the Andalusians running out narrow 1-0 winners. The next game in the group saw Real Madrid dismiss German giants Borussia Dortmund 3-0, helped by a wonder strike from Abraham Jose. In the afternoon, Betis bagged another three points by beating Dortmund 3-1, before Los Blancos and Los Che played out a 0-0 draw. As a result, Betis top the standings ahead of Wednesday's final group matches.

Group B

A blockbuster bout between Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain raised the curtain on Group B. The honours were eventually shared in a 1-1 draw. Next up was Juventus v R. Sporting, in a game in which the Asturians dazzled en route to upsetting the Italian big boys 2-0. However, Sporting were subsequently brought back down to earth with a bump, losing their following fixture 3-1 to Atletico. PSG overcame Juventus 1-0 in the last Group B encounter of the day to move second, level on points with the table-topping Colchoneros.

Group C

After FC Barcelona and Villarreal CF cancelled each other out in a goalless stalemate, Sevilla FC entered the fray in style with an impressive 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough. The Andalusians then proceeded to be held to a 1-1 draw by Villarreal, before Barça rounded off the day's action by routing Boro 8-0.
